The Roustabouts Theatre Co. is celebrating 6 years of bringing local actors, directors, and playwrights to the forefront of San Diego theatre. We produce fresh visions of classics, well-known contemporary plays, and new works with an ongoing commitment to introducing the theatrical art form to diverse audiences and underserved communities. Our associates are passionate about sharing their knowledge and experience and bringing creative opportunities to San Diego youth.
We are thrilled to announce the Roustabouts Youth Division, a new collaboration between The Roustabouts Theatre Co. and Kids on Stage Productions. This initiative brings together young actors from across San Diego County, regardless of their experience level, to embark on a journey of unique learning experiences, specialized training, and opportunities to shine on stage. We can’t wait to nurture and deepen a passion for the arts among our young performers, engage them in our beloved local theatre community, and welcome them to the TRTC family.
Now is a perfect time to start getting involved in things that will put you into the thick of doing what you want to do as an artist, writer, actor, musician, designer, or crew member in a professional production. This fun seminar with The Roustabouts Artistic Director Phil Johnson, an actor, writer, singer, director, producer, architect, and designer who has
spent his life in the arts, will offer you some insights about different classes, contest submissions, colleges, and other areas in which to find people in your fields right now.
Students will have the opportunity to tap into their comedic sides with this interactive class. Improv comedy is the cornerstone for many areas of entertainment: acting, writing, stand-up. We test their skills, motivate, and inspire them with games and scenes. We give your students character suggestions and give them an opportunity to let their imaginations run wild!
Students will have the opportunity to tap into their comedic acting chops with this interactive class. We bring scripts from plays and movies and have them give us their best take on some of the great scenes from stage and screen.
Have you been thinking about writing a play and want to know where to start? In this virtual workshop, students will have the opportunity to work with playwrights Phil Johnson and Will Cooper. They’ll engage in interactive activities to get insights as to how to get their ideas crystallized in addition to a brief introduction to understanding how to skillfully combine many elements to begin to take creative ideas from concept to culmination.
"Teaching artists (Sam Ginn & Mike Sears) were well prepared. They planned wonderfully appropriate improv activities for my classes of mostly non-English speakers. Everyone from Roustabouts were easy to work with and flexible. I would not hesitate to have them back again."
- Teri Ang, Horace Mann Middle School, San Diego
"Phil brings all of his brilliance and experience to the classroom. He is insightful, patient, highly knowledgeable, and funny. He is a master at his craft and anyone would be lucky to learn from him!"
- Marni Freedman - Head of San Diego Writers Festival, and Film, Memoir & Writing Coach in Southern California
‘’Phil Johnson is a brilliant actor, producer, and educator. When I was teaching at Point Loma High School - his shows and guest appearances for my students were so inspiring. He is an individual who has a positive, creative, artistic impact on all his students!’’
